About the Choir
Tring Choral Society currently has some 75 members and sings three concerts a year in St Peter & St Paul Church in Tring. It is usually accompanied by an orchestra of semi-professional players and uses outstanding professional soloists. The choir is led by Musical Director Colin Stevens. His rehearsals are well-directed and concise while his sense of humour makes them relaxed and fun.
We sing a wide variety of the choral classical repertoire, also including some contemporary music and occasionally new commissions. Records show the choir dates back to 1894. Click here to see details of previous concerts.
Rehearsals take place 7.45pm – 9.45pm on Mondays during term time, beginning in September and ending in early July. They are held in the centre of Tring at Akeman Street Baptist Church, HP23 6AA.
Most members find that the standard of their singing and sight-reading continues to improve with experience. The choir does not hold auditions.
Members have the opportunity to mix more widely within the society as we host a few social activities throughout the year such as the end of term summer barbecue, open garden coffee morning, annual afternoon walk and winter quiz night. A vibrant committee and volunteers help to run the Society.

Colin Stevens grew up in Tring and took over as Musical Director of Tring Choral Society from his father in 1974. His formal musical training took place at Trinity College London, where he studied organ. He has been privileged to play the organ at a number of English Cathedrals: at Notre-Dame in Paris and other major venues in the UK and Europe where he toured with the choir of Ely Cathedral.
From an early age he was organist and choirmaster at Tring Church as well as accompanist for Tring Choral Society. Under his leadership the choir began using an orchestra as accompaniment and he has engaged numerous top professional singers as concert soloists, bringing concerts of a very high standard to a Hertfordshire town.
Colin has broadened the Society’s range of music considerably and, as well as directing most of the established choral repertoire, he has encouraged the commissioning of a number of choral works and the performance of many contemporary pieces.
Colin is also an experienced accompanist having played for countless shows, musicals, operas and operettas. He has also musically directed a number of stage shows, including Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady and Side by Side by Stephen Sondheim.
After leaving full time work in the accountancy profession, Colin collaborated with the late Michael Bernstein in performing a successful tribute show to Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. They gave over 200 performances throughout the UK as well as a commissioned appearance on BBC Radio 4.
